NEW MATERIAL ART FAIR

08/08/2023 - Instagram Project: webcam model-like art

Instagram is where Ona (along with other digital sex workers) performs a striptease via poses, digital pasties, and provocative remarks. Her work exists within and comments on the toxic absurdity of the relationship between pro-sex empowerment and online culture. MyClub is another platform where a nude woman can be viewed as art. Also, you can earn a great deal of money from this art.

9/17/2014 - A LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

Dear NEW MATERIAL Art Fair Supporters and Potential Exhibitors:

We were very proud of our inaugural edition of NEW MATERIAL, fulfilling our obligations to promote professional artists as well as follow through with our unrelenting commitment to quality work. Our pledge to integrating free open calls for the Drawing Show, Tomorrow Stars our free Solo Exhibition space, donated space for media and video installation, while merging these works with our other selected artists, cumulatively created the quality and diversity that we were told stood out from many other established satellite fairs in Basel. Our dedication to curating an environment that promoted intimacy, a focus on content and an opportunity to commune with art in the midst of the visual overload of Art Basel, is a passion and one worth keeping alive.

With much discussion and consideration, Michael and I have decided to forgo running NMAF this December, in order to focus our attention on our Multiples. Chicago Critical Craft & Visual Culture Art Fair in October, as well as our Verge Art Fair in NYC in the spring 2015. These two other fairs are cut from the same ideological cloth as NEW MATERIAL, working directly with artists to show work that challenges trends, the status quo of display and stereotypical fair formats.

We were approached with an opportunity to pair with another art fair in a new space in Miami South Beach this year, but chose instead to keep our mandate of quality intact and regroup for an even better NEW MATERIAL in 2015, when we will revisit resuming the show with our reputation for high caliber work intact. We want to thank all those artists who participated in NMAF in 2013 and whose projects helped to illuminate our dedication to the artist’s voice, as well as to those visitors and critics who recognized our devotion to confront the parameters of fair culture by integrating other models of exhibiting, perception and organizing. We have an electronic record of those applicants who paid fees, which will be returned promptly.

Sincerely, Christine Kirouac

NEW MATERIAL is a boutique exposition that premiered December 2013 at the Chesterfield Hotel, one block from Scope, and three blocks from the Untitled Art Fair, concurrent with Art Basel Miami Beach. The focus of NEW MATERIAL is to expose brave departures in the practices of established artists and galleries; particularly bodies of work unfettered by trends and to date untested in the commercial realm.

"The opportunity New Material presented to me, as an unrepresented artist, to show during Art Basel is truly amazing. Congrats again on a great show!" 2013 Exhibitor Pilar Mata Dupont

“By having a hand curated plan/input from the inception, you allowed the work to be the most important aspect, giving it the space and respect it needed, while also avoiding a cattle-call mentality. I commend you for staying true to your vision.”   2013 Exhibitor Perry Pandrea

“Being an artist exhibitor at New Material Art Fair was an incredible experience.” 2013 Exhibitor Allison Kotzig

This made my experience working with the NEW MATERIAL Art Fair engaging and memorable." 2013 Exhibitor Roman Arevalo

"Christina and Michael worked tirelessly to ensure a show of the highest caliber, with a purity of purpose that is so refreshing in today's art market. As a participating artist, I was blown away by the level of personal attention and care that they took in presenting and marketing my work. They really brought a sense of meaning to the show - this is the kind of venue that makes artists want to make more work!" — 2013 Exhibitor Sam Jones

"As a young artist making my way into the art industry, NEW MATERIAL was the perfect stepping stone for welcoming solo artists in an elite art market such as Art Basel.” — 2013 Exhibitor Dana Blickensderfer
